How is it an issue? Here's a list of games with non-white skin colours (more on the skin colour conundrum below): I saw many negative reactions, like complaining about the game being woke - I guess because she has darker skin and is a female? - the protagonist being annoying, her talking too much - to the point that the devs even changed her: Online, the difference in feedback and reactions speaks volumes. When you then look at the reactions from many gamers, especially compared to white male protagonists, it's horrible tbh!!! Having female leads of color is a very recent achievement and still rare in big budget games.

We had very few female leads, and if any, then the white ones were dominating. Lara Croft was only popular because of pretty disgusting sexism - which the reboot tried to fix, but the publisher was disappointed by the sales numbers. History has a big influence on our current state!įemales like Samus only worked because it was so rare to have a female hero, but of course had to be white. Not many black main characters in the most successful Nintendo games to this date, for example. From Solid Snake, over Mario and Link, Doom marine, to every generic shooter protagonist, it was basically the default. You can't deny that, outside of few exceptions, the history of videogame main characters has been very clearly white male dominated. The industry is still full of baggage from the past. There definitely has been progress! But I don't think you can honestly say that it's not still an issue! Especially if we talk about females of color, to who I was referring to.
